Hello World!

Welcome one and all to new beginnings. I’ve decided to keep the original title of the post for tradition. The phrase “hello, world” is usually the first example used for programming languages in the IT world.

Back in 1972, Brian Kernighan wrote the first “hello, world” program as part of the documentation for the BCPL programming language developed by Martin Richards. BCPL was used while the C programming language was being developed at Bell Labs. In BCPL, the “hello, world” code would be used for early testing of the C compiler, and eventually made its way into the first C book was published in 1978 by both Kernighan and Richards. It became a standard for new programmers.

Why does this matter to me? Well, for one, I’m a nerd who graduated with a degree in Computer Science Engineering. Secondly, I’ve been writing code since the age of fourteen, over twenty-four years ago. My first programs were written in Q-basic, and Turbo Pascal, which were none other than “hello, world.” Thirdly, I’m one for traditions. The older I get, the more I appreciate the importance of tradition. For example, take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art steeped in tradition. It is a beautiful art full of history and early anecdotes and legendary stories. Yet, it is a robust art, one that is stressed tested day in and day out by hundreds of thousands of millions of practitioners throughout the world. The fundamentals to the art are much like the “hello, world” scripts that new programmers pick up daily. And yet, it is but a taste of the big wonderful world that is the gentle art. In the same way, I hope this hello world leads to big things for this web site.
